E&EM Involved in NEPI 2001 Environmental Summits

Several members of the E&EM family were involved in the 2001 Environmental Summit sponsored by the National Environmental Policy Institute (NEPI) during the period March 7-9, 2001, and in the NEPI’s National Contaminated Sediments Dialogue symposium, held at the National Press Club on November 1, 2001.
Planning Begins for International Environmental Conference in Shanghai, China

Lieutenant General Vald Elvin R. (“Vald”) Heiberg III, former commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and E&EM lead professor Jonathan P. Deason were featured on the CNN radio talk show “GW Washington Forum” on March 10, 2001.
E&EM Doctoral Student Jerry Sherk Publishes Two New Papers

E&EM doctoral student Jerry Sherk recently published two papers in influential archival journals. The first paper, entitled “The Regulated Riparian Model State Water Code: Perspectives on the Relationship Between Water Quantity and Water Quality,” was published in the journal Rivers.
New Approach to Cleaning up Urban Rivers Presented at Brownfields Conference

A new approach to cleaning up contaminated urban rivers was presented by E&EM Professor Jonathan Deason at the EPA Brownfields 2000 conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
GW Artists Present Environmental Performance at Lisner Auditorium

GW dance choreographer Maida Withers, produced a spectacular dance, music and visual performance entitled Aurora/2001: Dance of the Auroras – Fire in the Sky at GW’s Lisner Auditorium, on February 15 & 16, 2001. Aurora/2001 was a multidimensional performance that took the audience on a poetic voyage through space from the Sun through Earth’s auroras, the mystic luminaries of the Arctic and Antarctic skies known as the northern and southern lights.
E&EM Doctoral Students Defend Dissertation Research on Fuel Cell Cogeneration and Environmental Impact Assessment

Andreas Deppe, an Energy Systems Specialist with Hagler Baillee, Inc., defended his doctoral research on “Analysis and Simulation of a Residential Fuel Cell Cogeneration Market” on May 31, 2001.
E&EM Participates in Global Water Crisis International Workshop

Several GW faculty members played key roles in the Workshop on Global Water Crisis: Engineering the Solution that was conducted at the American Society of Civil Engineers World Headquarters in Reston, Virginia on November 16-17, 2000.
E&EM Graduate Pursues Innovative Programs at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Nancy Birnbaum, a 1995 environmental graduate of the George Washington University, is a senior official in one the most innovative programs at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That program, called Project XL, is a personal initiative of President Clinton and Administrator Browner.
GW Environmental Programs Strengthen Coordination Mechanisms

ASEM National Conference is a Big Hit

A number of E&EM graduate students, faculty members and alumni played active roles in the 21st Annual American Society for Engineering Management Conference that was held in Washington, D.C. during the period October 4-7, 2000. The conference, which was co-sponsored by the George Washington University, featured more than 150 speakers, including a number of top environmental management figures from companies, government agencies and universities from around the country.
University of Illinios Professor Speaks at GW/ASEM Luncheon

In addition to his appointment to the Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty at the University of Illinios, Professor Herricks also is a Department Affiliate in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at Illinois. He is engaged in research activities concerning methods of improving environmental deicsi0n making and ecologically relevant enginering design. Professor Herricks holds a Ph.D. degree in Biology from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and M.S. degree from the Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. degree from the University of Kansas.
