Doctoral Candidate Chukwu Works with Global Environmental Facility

E&EM doctoral candidate Uzo Eric Chukwu project is working closely with officials of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) to developing a procedure to evaluate project impact of GEF investments in developing countries.  The GEF is the multinational environmental investment arm of the World Bank the United Nations Environmental Programme and the United Nations Development Programme.  The GEF headquarters building is located adjacent to the GW campus in Washington, D.C.

Botero Joins Energy Research Organization in Colombia

E&EM doctoral candidate Sergio B. Botero has joined the Energy and Thermodynamics Group (ETG) at the Research Center of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia.  The ETG assists industries in identifying energy bottlenecks, increasing equipment operating efficiency, and use of energy resources.

E&EM Professor Appointed to National Research Council Committee

Dr. Jonathan P. Deason, Lead Professor of the Environmental and Energy Management program, Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, SEAS, was appointed to a committee of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences/National Academy of Engineering, in April 2000.

Orellana Defends Dissertation on Effects of Substrates on Anaerobic Biodegradation

On May 21, 2000, Rosa Isabel Orellana defended her doctoral dissertation to an inter-departmental examining committee.  The overall objective of Rosa’s research was to investigate the toxicity and the degree of inhibition of benzene and toluene under anaerobic (methanogenesis) conditions, using different substrates and temperature conditions.

Visiting Russian Scholar Works with Environmental and Energy Program

Over the past year, the E&EM program was fortunate to receive a visit by Elena Emelyanova, a visiting scholar from Russia.  Elena, who took our EMSE 225 Hazardous Waste Management course in the summer 2000 semester and worked with E&EM students and faculty in other ways, was participating in the U.S.

E&EM Professor Appears on CNN Radio Talk Show

Dr. Jonathan P. Deason, lead professor for the GW Environmental and Energy Management Program, was a guest on the radio talk show “GW Washington Forum” on June 29, 2000.  Deason appeared with Dr. J. Winston Porter, former Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Solid Waste and Emergency Response.

E&EM Professors Publish Two New Books

E&EM Graduate Scores Major Victory with Everglades Restoration Reauthorization Bill

Catharine S. Cyr, a 1996 graduate of GW’s Environmental and Energy Management Program and a key player in environmental programs in the U.S. Senate, recently scored big time with the recent authorization of the $11 billion Everglades restoration bill by the U.S. Congress.  In her position as Senior Policy Advisor to Senator Bob Graham (D-FL), Catharine has worked over the past two years to bring to fruition what literally is one of the most important and difficult environmental initiatives anywhere in the world.

On February 8, 2000, E&EM representatives met with Elliott Laws, former Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Erol Munuz, Director of Policy and Program Development at the Outlook Policy Forum.  Representing GW at the meeting were E&EM doctoral candidate Joseph Blackford and E&EM Lead Professor Jonathan Deason.

E&EM Pursues University Affiliate Program with Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF)

June 8, 2000

On February 11, 2000, GW's E&EM program was one of several university environmental and natural resources programs that met to help design RNRF’s new University Affiliate Program and to provide input to the RNRF’s year 2000 Congress on “The Evolving Role of Natural Resource Professionals.”  The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation is a federation of 15 professional societies, such as the American Forestry Society, American Water Resources Association, the Wildlife Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

GW Makes Presentations at Brownfields Conference

E&EM doctoral candidate Jerry Sherk and E&EM professor Jonathan Deason made presentations at the national Brownfields conference held in the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas, Texas during the period December 6-8, 1999.
