On February 21, 2025, GW Engineering-based Environmental and Energy Management Institute (EEMI) conducted a hugely popular web-based seminar entitled “Guardrails of Governance: Legal and Administrative Resilience in Trump 2.0.” The webinar, which attracted more than 1,200 registered participants, was a follow-up to the December 18, 2024, EEMI-produced webinar entitled “Navigating the Trump 2 Deregulatory Agenda: Lessons from Environmental Officials in Trump 1” (https://eem.engineering.gwu.edu/eemi-conducts-hugely-popular-webinar-protecting-environment-upcoming-presidential-administration).

EEMI Reflects on Past Interactions with the Late President Jimmy Carter

President Jimmy Cater’s death at age 100 in December 2024 prompted some reflections and reminiscences by several EMMI colleagues. Dr. Andras Simonyi, former Hungarian Ambassador to the United States, recalled a long conversation with President Carter, followed by Carter’s decision to return the Crown of St. Stephen to the Hungarian people in 1978, which had been held by the U.S. since the end of World War II in 1945.

EEM alumnus Mu Hu recently accepted a position as a Data Scientist at the Albemarle Corporation, based in Charlotte, NC. ALB is a lithium mining public company in the U.S. that sells lithium ores and salts to battery manufacturers or automobile OEMs; lithium being an extremely important material for electric vehicle batteries.

During the Fall-Winter 2024 semester, Washington DC’s WTOP News covered the very popular off-grid buildings of EEMI’s Director of Sustainable Energy Professor Scott Sklar (https://eemi.engineering.gwu.edu/sklar-scott). WTOP News, established in 1926, includes an array of news outlets in the Washington DC region, including several ratio stations, social media outlets such as its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and a popular website.

On November 13, 2024, the GW Environmental and Energy Management Institute was featured in a presentation to a conference of the Washington Metropolitan Area Chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). INCOSE is a not-for-profit membership organization founded to develop and disseminate the transdisciplinary principles and practices that enable the realization of successful systems in the interest of developing the global community of systems engineers and systems approaches to problems.

EEMI Hosts U.S. State Department Delegation from Kazakhstan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources

On May 21, 2024, EEMI hosted a US State Department-sponsored delegation from Kazakhstan. The delegation was visiting the US on the topic “Best Practices for Developing National Air Quality Standards” under the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. The delegates were visiting the US to meet with experts on air quality standards to learn how standards are determined, how air quality is monitored, the debate about regulations, and the impact of air quality on health.

Recent News of EEM Students, Graduates and Faculty

2006 EEM Ph.D. graduate Dr. Michael Helwig has been appointed as a full-time Associate Teaching Professor at the Colorado School of Mines starting with the Fall 2024 semester. After earning his Ph.D. at GW, Dr. Helwig worked as a research analyst at The Institute for Defense Analyses, as a senior engineer for the National Renewable Energy Lab, and as an instructor at Iowa State University and Kansas State University.
