GW and Chinese Colleagues Discuss Low Carbon Development
On September 16, 2024, members of the GW Engineering’s Environmental and Energy Management Institute (EEMI) met with colleagues from the International Fund for China’s Environment (IFCE) and the Chinese Electric Power Development Association to discuss approaches to low carbon development in China.
EEMI Conducts Climate Change Seminar
The GW Engineering-hosted Environmental Energy Management Institute conducted a web-based seminar on climate change featuring Dr. Chris Greig, a tenured professor at Princeton University.
EEMI Completes Key Climate Change Research Project for the United Nations Secretariat
On May 31, 2024, EEMI submitted its final report on a research project that developed a National Digitalization Readiness Index. The NDRI is a comprehensive set of metrics designed to evaluate how prepared countries are for the ongoing worldwide transition to a digital economy as related to the global climate change challenge. The United Nations Climate Technology Centre and Network funded the project.
EEMI Leads Major Solar Conference
EEMI Director for Sustainable Energy, Professor Scott Sklar, served as the General Chairman of SOLAR 2024, the annual national conference of the American Solar Energy Society. The event, attended by some 500 in-person participants in addition to many virtual participants, was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Student Center on GW’s main Foggy Bottom campus on 20-23, 2024.
EEMI and Delegation from Oman Explore Research Collaboration Opportunities
On April 23, members of the GW Engineering Environmental and Energy Management Institute (EEMI) met with delegates from the Sultanate of Oman to discuss collaborative research activities. Representing GW were Professor Scott Sklar, EEMI Director of Sustainable Energy, and Jonathan Deason, EEMI Executive Director. Attending from Oman were Dr. Mohammed Saif Al Kalbani, Director-General of the Oman Environment Authority; Counselor Eng. Nasr Khalaf Al Saidi from the Oman Foreign Ministry; and Dr. Saleh Nasser Al-Saadi, Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Center at the Sultan Qaboos University near Muscat.
Environmental and Energy Management Students Celebrate 2024 Graduation
Several dozen EEM program graduates were prominent among the more than 700 graduates of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the 2024 Graduation Celebration on Friday evening, May 17, 2024. With a full complement of more than 4,000 parents, siblings, spouses, children, and other relatives and friends present to honor their accomplishments, graduates walked across the stage at the Smith Center to receive their diplomas and congratulations from Dean John Lach and the SEAS faculty.
EEMI Executive Director Presents Keynote Address at ASEE Conference
EEMI Executive Director Dr. Jonathan Deason served as the keynote speaker at the Spring 2024 American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Middle Atlantic Section (MAS) Conference on April 20, 2024.
Recent News of EEM Students, Graduates and Faculty
2006 EEM Ph.D. graduate Dr. Michael Helwig has been appointed as a full-time Associate Teaching Professor at the Colorado School of Mines starting with the Fall 2024 semester. After earning his Ph.D. at GW, Dr. Helwig worked as a research analyst at The Institute for Defense Analyses, as a senior engineer for the National Renewable Energy Lab, and as an instructor at Iowa State University and Kansas State University.
EEMI Hosts U.S. State Department Delegation from Kazakhstan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources
On May 21, 2024, EEMI hosted a US State Department-sponsored delegation from Kazakhstan. The delegation was visiting the US to meet with experts on air quality standards and learn how standards are determined, monitored, and the debate about regulations.
EEMI Conducts State-of-the-Art Webinars on Worldwide Environmental and Energy Issues in Spring-Summer 2024 Semesters
During the Spring-Summer 2024 semester, EEMI presented four outstanding webinars in its Distinguished Lecture Series under the direction of EEMI Director of Professional Education Dr. Edward Saltzberg.
