Minister of Environment from Egypt Gives Speech on Environmental Policies

On November 26, 2002, Dr. Nadia Ebeid, the first minister appointed to the newly created Ministry of the Environment in Egypt, gave an overview of the environmental issues in her country and shared her experiences in implementing policies. Dr. Ebeid is also the first female Minister of the Environment in the Arab World. She was influential in the incorporation of environmental issues in Egypt's Five-Year Development Plan (2002 - 2007) and worked with Egyptian cabinet ministers, the private sector, and the civil society.

Dr. Amjad Ali earned his doctorate from The George Washington University, Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE) Department in May 2000. He joined University of Maryland University College (UMUC) as an adjunct faculty member in August 2000.

GW E&EM Program Works with Public and Private Sector Organizations to Find New Ways of Financing Water Infrastructure

Faculty and students in the Environmental and Energy Management program at GW are actively engaged in discussions with several public and private entities to undertake actions directed toward finding new ways of financing critically needed water infrastructure investments around the world. These actions may manifest themselves into a symposium on public-private partnerships (PPP) in water and wastewater facilities that may be held at GW in 2004, and an extended-term research project investigating the conditions under which various types of PPP arrangements make sense in various parts of the world.

On October 10, 2003, Imtiaz Shah successfully defended his doctoral dissertation research on the topic of “A Descriptive Environmental Impact Assessment Process Model for Pakistan.”

E&EM Students Attend RNRF Conference & Volunteer as Recorders

June 15, 2003

E&EM students Elvin Yuzugullu and Bruk Berhane volunteered as recorders at the Renewable Natural Resources Foundation's (RNRF's) annual national conference on "Personnel Trends, Education Policy and Evolving Roles of Federal and State Natural Resources Agencies," held in conjunction with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), at their headquarters in Washington DC, on October 28-29, 2003. Elvin and Bruk were responsible for taking notes during conference sessions and the working group meetings. This provided a valuable opportunity to learn more about the recent issues and network with professionals in the area.
