GW President Steven Joel Trachtenberg paid a visit to the fourth annual GW Earthweek-Plus Student Sustainability Research and Course Project Competition, which was held in the Marvin Center on Monday, April 19th. Fourteen students participated in presenting their sustainability scholarship projects to a panel of judges and an audience of guest faculty and students. President Tractenberg congratulated the students for their sustainability efforts and encouraged them to continue to broaden and deepen their important work in the future.
This competition is one of the many opportunities that are available to students studying at GW University. One of the Participants was EMSE Masters of Science candidate Scott Christian who presented his paper on “The Viability of Alternatives to Methyl Bromide.” His paper studied various proposed alternatives, in terms of applicator safety, accidental misuse, environmental persistence, effectiveness, costs, and degree of operational change.
This year's winner of the $1,000 cash award was MBA first year student Carl Schlemmer, for his presentation on "Art for The Animals", a non-profit organization that works with others to increase consumer awareness of endangered species and other environmental issues and promotes businesses which save wildlife and support local communities. Carl is working with both GW individuals and student teams that support this sustainability education initiative.
Other competition winners (of $250 cash each) were: Guy Catlett (BBA) for "Amazonlife & Treetap", Jason Barry (Elliott IDS) for "Biodiversity Resource Sustainability and International Development Policy", Zachary Rozga (MTA) for "Market Access for Rural Sustainable Tourism Projects," and, D. Andrew
Goldstone (MBA), for "Corporate Sustainability Initiative: The Business Case for Corporate Sustainability."
This year's judging was performed by GWSB Visiting Professor Mark Heuer (also of Boise Cascade Office Products), Mr. Dan Amon of the U.S. EPA Sustainable Facilities Practices Branch, and Ms. Margery Moore of the BNA Environmental, Health, & Safety Division and Moore Environmental Solutions. The event was co-sponsored by Boise Cascade Office Products (which provided the cash awards) and the GW SMPP Environmental and Social Sustainability Initiative (Assoc. Prof. Mark Starik, Director).
