Three graduate students (Dulce Meldau, Sylvana Ricciarini and Elvin Yuzugullu) attended a career fair and an informative pre-event seminar held by Women for Hire, an organization established to guide women in their career search. The event started with a speech by Women for Hire CEO, Tory Johnson. She gave advice on key points to keep in mind when doing a job search, interviewing and negotiating.
Some of the tips were: Eliminate negative barriers: Negative thought on your weaknesses should not be the focus. Try to improve in areas needed and emphasize your strengths.
Attend many networking events, and keep notes as to who you met and who you'd like to keep in touch with.
Before going to an interview, learn about the issues affecting the company and the company's competitors.
When interviewing, speak positively about previous experiences and successes.
When faced with negative questions from an employer during an interview, your answer should demonstrate: the problem, the action taken to solve it, and the results.
The Career Fair followed this seminar, with over 45 companies in fields including aerospace, automotive, engineering, finance, government, hospitality, human resources, insurance, law enforcement, merchandising, retail management, sales, and technology.
