Spring 2014 Semester Witnesses Three Successful Doctoral and Professional Dissertation Defenses

GW Team Takes 7th Place Nationally in Solar Decathlon

Students and faculty from George Washington, Catholic and American Universities collaborated on an entry to the biennial Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the Department of Energy. The GW team, called “Team Capitol DC,” designed and built its entry “Harvest Home,” a 700-square-foot sustainable structure and garden. Harvest Home, which represented GW’s first venture into the Solar Decathlon competition, placed seventh among 20 finalists representing universities across the globe, in the final round of the competition held in Irvine, California during October 3-13, 2013.

Ira Payosova Appears on Voice of America Television. EMSE doctoral student Iryna Payosova was interviewed on Voice of America Television about the potential environmental impacts of two proposed large Chinese developments in the Crimea region of Ukraine.

EEM Participates in Energy Masters Program

GW Goes Solar
May 4, 2014
GW will see its first phase of solar power arriving in the Spring 2015 semester. The University entered into a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Duke Energy Renewables to provide solar power generated in North Carolina to meet half of our electricity needs.

Patrick Murphy Defends Doctoral Proposal

Patrick Murphy defended his doctoral dissertation proposal on the topic of “A Method for Determining the Cost of Reliable Electricity, Considering Grid Unreliability: A Case Study and Applied Analysis in Uganda” in November 2014. In his research, Patrick plans to address a shortfall in past efforts to address a lack of electricity access to grid-connected, distributed generation and stand-alone, distributed energy resources.

EEM Professor Ekundayo Shittu Awarded Environmental and Energy Grants

Professor Ekundayo Shittu was awarded two research grants in recent months, one in the area of healthcare logistics and the other in the area of renewable energy credits. These grants reflect the breadth of Prof. Shittu’s cutting-edge research program.

EEM Receives Research Grant from NIST

Our new Environmental and Energy Management Institute received a $75,000 grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology in September 2014. This project, entitled the GW Standards Education Initiative, is a collaborative effort between SEAS and the George Washington Institute of Public Policy (GWIPP).
