Several dozen EEM program graduates were prominent among the more than 700 graduates of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the 2024 Graduation Celebration on Friday evening, May 17, 2024. With a full complement of more than 4,000 parents, siblings, spouses, children, and other relatives and friends present to honor their accomplishments, graduates walked across the stage at the Smith Center to receive their diplomas and congratulations from Dean John Lach and the SEAS faculty. Environmental and Energy Management Institute Executive Director Professor Jonathan Deason served as the School Marshal for the event.

The ceremony included the presentation of 28 student awards to recognize various forms of student achievement, recognition of each graduate, and a keynote address by W. Scott Amey. Scott, a fabulously successful engineering entrepreneur, earned his Master of Science degree in Computer Science from GW Engineering in 1975 and is the founder of the School’s W. Scott Amey Career Services Center.

“I’ve always been someone who believes in the power of having an impactful network,” Scott said. “This is one of the reasons I helped establish the career center within GW Engineering. I wanted to create a resource that students could use to build their career readiness and professional networks.”

GW Engineering Dean Dr. John Lach charged the graduating students with one last request. He said “As you go forth from GW today, do so with optimism for the future. The most important thing you can do as you begin the next phase of your life is to Be Yourself! Let your intuition, your skills, and the knowledge you have gained at the School of Engineering and Applied Science guide you. Make the world a better place. Everything we do as engineers and computer scientists can have a profound and positive impact on our colleagues, communities, families, friends, and future generations.”

Before the ceremony, graduates, their guests, and SEAS faculty, staff, and alumni gathered at the new Science and Engineering Hall for a pre-celebration reception, and two days later, on May 19, the EEM graduates were treated to a spectacular University-wide graduation ceremony on the National Mall.
