In April 2023, a new book entitled “HANDBOOK OF MULTI-LEVEL CLIMATE ACTIONS: SPARKING AND SUSTAININGTRANSFORMATIVE APPROACHES,” co-edited by GW Environmental and Energy Management Institute Director Dr. Jonathan Deason, was released by the publisher, Edward Edgar Publishing of the United Kingdom.
The book emphasizes the need for significant climate actions by every capable person on the planet at multiple levels of human experience and society. This includes individuals/households, formal and informal groups, organizations/communities, from local to global, and all levels of businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations. It highlights the many ways that our species can meet the climate crisis and how entities at every level of human experience are, could be, and should be developing and implementing climate solutions, including those advancing energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization, and nature’s ability to sequester carbon.
Nearly two dozen knowledgeable authors, representing both academics and practitioners, from multiple countries and disciplines, explain actions that can be taken to ensure that future generations of both humans and non-humans on our planet will have a sustainable climate that meets their on-going needs. A chapter entitled “Climate Action: From Multilateral Negotiations to Implementation” was authored by EEMI Operations Director Dr. Mukes Kapilashrami, and a chapter entitled “The Climate Sprint: An Agile Process for Catalytic Collaboration Towards a Just Transition” was authored by active EEMI member Jimmy Jia, currently pursuing his Doctor Philosophy degree at the University of Oxford.
The book presents an overview of the global climate change challenge and the path forward suggested in the book regarding how to meet that challenge. Unfortunately, the collective impacts of the well-intentioned global agreements to date have fallen far short of achieving the results necessary to prevent climate catastrophe. Despite that lack of progress, there is little doubt that humans and all other entities on Earth are in a state of emergency and so we need to take stronger actions to prevent our climate threat from getting worse and hopefully halting or even reversing it. The solution lies in continuously increasing those actions that appear to be the most effective and that can be implemented at all levels of human endeavor, as set forth in the book.
EEMI Director of Renewable Energy Scott Sklar stated in his published endorsement the book “As our planet changes—from melting ice caps, record-breaking heat and cold, super-strong hurricanes and ocean surges—most think it's someone else's problem. hurricanes and ocean surges—most think it's someone else's problem. This handbook emphasizes the need for everyone—from individuals to community to local government and industry, to national governments and international consortia—to all step up, so as to leave the wonderful bounty from this planet for our children and children's children. A must read!”
