The summer of 2011 saw a flurry of research undertaken on the Foggy Bottom campus by virtue of research grants to three outstanding doctoral students by the Logistics Management Institute.

Recent E&EM; doctoral graduate Laura Verduzco, Lead Planning Engineer at Chevron in the San Francisco Bay Area, recently was characterized as “a rising star among Chevron's young engineers and scientists” in a Chevron publication. Laura, who received her Ph.D. degree in Environmental and Energy Management in 2006, presently is a Lead Planning Engineer with Chevron. She currently divides her time between Chevron Energy Technology Company and Catchlight Energy LLC, a Chevron-Weyerhaeuser joint venture established to develop the next generation of renewable, cellulose-based transportation fuels from nonfood sources.

EEM Professor Appointed Executive Director for New Climate Change NGO

EEM Adjunct Professor Jigar Shah recently was named Executive Director for the Institute for Industrial Productivity, an NGO headquartered in Paris focused on reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Dr. Shah, who taught the EEM courses EMSE 6260 Energy Management and EMSE 6285 Analytical Tools for Energy Management for most of the past decade, is taking a leave of absence from his reaching duties to start up the new NGO.

Michael R. Nosbisch, who graduated from the Environmental and Energy Management program in 2001 with a Master of Engineering Management degree, was elected in 2010 as President of of Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering. Mike presently is Vice President, Earned Value Management at SM&A;, a leading aerospace and defense industry consulting firm headquartered in Newport Beach, California.
EEM Doctoral Student Installs Solar Panels on Home

Practicing what he preaches, EEM doctoral candidate Ariel Castillo completed a solar installation on his home in 2010. Ariel, who is conducting research on solar power under a grant from the Solar Institute, said that his installation included 18 230 watt SunModules and 18 micro inverters.
Doctoral Student Christyl Johnson Named Deputy Director of NASA Goddard

Doctoral Student Christyl Johnson has been named the new Deputy Director for Science and Technology at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Christyl’s previous position was Executive Director of the National Science and Technology Council, Office of Science and Technology Policy, in the White House. In her new position, she will manage the extensive research and development activities of the Goddard Space Flight Center. She also will be responsible for formulating the Center's future science and technology goals and leading an integrated program of investments aligned to meet those goals.
Joint Energy Engineering Certificate Program Approved

A new Energy Engineering Certificate Program has been approved by the University Administration, beginning with the Fall 2010 semester. The new program, a joint venture between the EMSE Environmental and Energy Management concentration and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, is designed to provide state-of-the art energy management and engineering postgraduate education for those not wishing to pursue a full graduate degree.
