Christin Kjelland, an E&EM student and a M.A. candidate in International Affairs at the Elliott School focusing on environmental issues in Asia, recently returned from South Korea where she spent six weeks studying the Korean language. Chrisie’s overseas study was facilitated by a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship from the Sigur Center. While in Korea, she studied at the Ewha Woman’s University and at the Yonsei University.
While in Korea, Chrisie also met with Green Korea United, an environmental NGO dedicated to addressing both Korean and regional environmental problems such as pollution of Korea’s three main waterways, conservation of the regions endangered animals, and collaboration in monitoring pollution of U.S. military bases in Korea.
Since her return from Korea, Chrisie has been is interning at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Oceans, Environment, and Scientific Affairs, working mainly on Science & Technology Agreements with Asian countries. She plans complete her Master’s degree in May 2010.
