In January 2026, several EEM and EMSE colleagues participated in a premiere of the film “Dr. Lilia Abron: The Legacy of the First Lady of Compassionate Engineering.” This new film honors Dr. Lilia Abron, who is a long-time member of the EEMI Board of Advisors (https://eemi.engineering.gwu.edu/advisory-board). Dr. Abron also is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and received an EEMI Distinguished Service Award to from SEAS Dean John Lach on January 17, 2020.

The film was in development for over two years, led by Mr. DL Mothusi Guy and his team from South Africa. The premiere viewing event was a joyful celebration of Dr. Abron and her incredible legacy. The room was filled with friends, family, and colleagues - past and present - from Dr. Abron’s company PEER Consultants, Howard University and GW.
EEM Master’s grad Prathyaj Mantha said that Dr. Abron is “a true legend of our industry. I was absolutely amazed by the creative work of DL Mothusi Guy and his team in bringing this story to life. It was a wonderful and inspiring event, and I’m truly honored to work for Dr. Abron and be mentored by her.”
Marija Stefanovic, another EEM grad, said that “the film is a powerful documentary honoring Dr. Abron, whose life’s work has been dedicated to sustainable development as though people mattered. This was more than a screening - it was a celebration of purpose, leadership, and impact. A tribute to a woman who paved the way for others. A history maker and visionary.”
Dr. Abron’s journey reminds us that engineering is not just about systems and structures - it’s about people, dignity, and opportunity. Her legacy continues to shape how we think about solving environmental challenges and building a better tomorrow.
