During the Fall 2016 semester, the Environmental and Energy Management Institute (EEMI) received two new research awards, bringing to seven the number of external research awards won by the Institute to date.
On September 15, 2016, the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations & Environment (Environment, Safety and Occupational Health Division) awarded a $41,519 grant to the EEMI. The purpose of the award is to provide technical and management support to DOD’s Chemical and Material Risk Management Program. EEMI Senior Research Scientist Dr. Kelly Scanlon is serving as the principal investigator (PI) for this award. This is a follow-on award for work undertaken by Dr. Scanlon under a Spring 2016 award from the U.S. Department of Defense.
Also this semester, the LMI Research Institute awarded EEMI Professor Ekundayo Shittu a one-year $50,000 grant for his proposal, “Developing a Low-Cost Integrated Internet of Things Ecosystem for Asset Management.” This project continues the development of a solution platform based on the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) to create business efficiencies in parts replacement and robust condition-based maintenance, and to enhance worker productivity in certain functional areas. This is the third GW project with Prof. Shittu as PI that LMI has funded over the past three years.
The Fall 2016 semester also saw the completion of projects undertaken under previous grants to EEMI researchers. Those included a grid resiliency grant of $75,000 from the Department of Defense through the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a $39,000 grant from Duke Energy Renewables for a project on “Microgrid Financing: Challenges and Solutions.” Professor Dayo Shittu served as the principal investigator for both of those projects.
In addition, EEMI researchers worked with additional sponsors in moving forward proposals in progress with the National Association of Water Companies on a potential $549,321 award for investigation into public-private partnership models for water and wastewater utilities under the leadership of Professor Royce Francis, a $75,000 proposal to the National Institute for Standards and Technology under the leadership of Professor Joe Cascio, and a $1,749,137 proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy to develop an Industrial Assessment Center under the leadership of Professor Saniya LeBlanc.
