E&EM masters student Brian P. Smith, successfully completed his masters thesis on “Water Management in the 21st Century – Current Challenges and Strategies.” In his thesis research, Brian, who obtained his B.S. degree in 1992 from Springfield College, examined solutions that are being pursued to solve the future challenges the United States will face to provide adequate amounts of clean water to it’s citizens.
Brian focused specific attention on current water availability and use, the various management strategies and challenges including the Soft Path approach and Public-Private Partnerships, and the efforts to ensure water supply. His thesis also explored the similarities and connections between water and energy, and examined connections between water and energy management and use. In addition, Brian examined a growing trend to privatize the electric and water utilities and analyzed possible solutions to water management issues while helping to alleviate energy management issues.
