GW recently was notified that it will be included in the Edna Sussman Environmental Internship program, a great opportunity for students who are dedicated to environmental studies. GW intends to submit five students nominations from among its various environmental graduate programs, including the Environmental and Energy Management Program, with a deadline in early February 2007 for applications to be submitted. A recent meeting with trustees of the Sussman Foundation made clear that applicants should have serious environmental interests and career ambitions and need to propose a serious project that can be completed in a summer in affiliation with some agency or nonprofit in the US. Field research seemed especially welcome, but almost anything that would in some way contribute to an improved environment should be acceptable. Students need to nail down an internship site and get a letter from the person who will supervise their work, so time is of the essence.

Environmental Internships for Graduate Students
Purpose: Enable students in environmental studies programs to obtain real-world experience and conduct projects of potential benefit to the environment through internships
Value: Stipend of approximately $5,000 for a 13-week summer project,
Less if half-time involvement
Eligible Candidates: Master’s or doctoral student studying full-time in an environmental studies program with intention to pursue a career in an environmental field; can be U.S. or international student
Eligible Fields: MA in Environmental and Resource Policy
MPP with a focus on environmental policy
LLM, JD in Environmental Law, Government Procurement and Environmental Law, International Environmental Law, Sustainable Growth and Environmental Law
MBA in Environmental Policy and Management
MS or DSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus on environmental
MPP with specialization in environmental policy
MS in Engineering Management with a focus on Environmental and Energy Management
MPH, DrPH in Environmental and Occupational Health
Eligible Projects: Based at a nonprofit, government agency, or possibly corporation
Done off campus, anywhere in the U.S.
Focused project on an environmental topic (could be a thesis or capstone project)
Achievable in the allotted time
Normally done in summer

1. Project proposal (500 words on a focused project to be conducted at a self-selected internship site—include career goal)
2. Letter of recommendation from professor/program director
3. Acceptance letter from the chosen host agency or organization
4. Resume or CV
5. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts
Deadline: Submit applications to the Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships (Rice Hall 602, 2121 I St. NW) by February 14, 2007. Applications will be screened at GW before the allowed number of applications is forwarded to the Sussman Fund.
