As a direct result of recommendations of GW’s new Sustainability Task Force, the University joined the National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE) and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education during the spring 2008 semester (AASHE).
NCSE plays a critical role in advancing environmental research and education programs at universities nationwide, now including GW. Through its University Affiliate Program, NCSE serves as a conduit among participating institutions and convenes environmental education, research, and outreach activities and programs that enhance individual efforts of its 150 member institutions.
Because of its new membership in the NCSE, GW will now be involved in networking and collaboration through the Council of Environmental Deans and Directors - a professional society for the environmental leaders on Affiliate campuses. CEDD is an organization working to improve the quality, stature and effectiveness of interdisciplinary environmental programs on the nation’s campuses. It has programs on curricular advancement, career paths, best practices in corporate sustainability and climate change education.
GW also will now be able to participate in the annual National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, participate in the University-Federal Dialogue on Environmental Research and Education Funding, have free campus-wide faculty and student access to the three online Environment & Energy publications, and have access to internship opportunities at federal agencies for students and recent graduates through NCSE's new Campus to Careers program.
Through its new membership in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, GW will participate in the growing network of colleges and universities, businesses, and organizations working to advance sustainability in higher education. Institutional membership covers everyone on campus and includes access to members-only resources, discounts to AASHE-sponsored workshops and events, and opportunities for professional development and networking.
Since all GW students and faculty are now covered by AASHE membership, here are instructions for access to AASHE member-only resources:
1. From the home page (http://www.aashe.org), click on member login or follow this link:
http://www.aashe.org/members/memberlogin.php
Click create new account. Use your GW email address as your user name. You will receive a password in the inbox of the email account you used for the user name. Go back to the login page, enter your email in the user name box and type or paste the password that was emailed to you in the password box. That should give you access to all of our locked resources. All GW faculty, staff and students can use their own email to create login credentials for themselves.
2. One of the best ways to keep current on the evolving landscape of campus sustainability is to subscribe to the AASHE Bulletin, a weekly compilation of the latest sustainability news, resources, events, and opportunities at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
