Some of GW's environmental research was put on display during Earthweek 2000, organized by the Center for Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management (CEPSM). More than two dozen GWU academics and Washington D.C. area researchers presented their respective sustainability research projects to an audience of active business, government, non-profit, and academic participants, on Tuesday, April 18th, in the GW Marvin Center.
Topics presented at the event included a description of a low-impact water systems development, a presentation about selection of sustainability indicators, a discussion of voluntary environmental programs. The event was capped off by a catered reception at the new GW University Club, which was co-sponsored by ICF Consulting, Inc. and the World Resources Institute.
On Wednesday, April 18th, CEPSM, along with Boise Cascade, ICF Consulting, and the Metropolitan Washington Environmental Professionals, coordinated a Student Environmental Research Competition and an Environmental Information Career Panel and Fair in the GW Marvin Center Ballroom. Polly Berman, SBPM Doctoral Candidate and CEPSM Research Associate, organized the event, which included judges from Boise Cascade Corp., the World Resources Institute, and the U.S. Postal Service.
Five GW graduate students won cash awards at the competition, presenting research topics on sustainable tourism, U.S. wilderness policies, and local community sustainability projects, among others. GW's Earthweek 2000 celebration concluded with an environmental career panel and fair featuring, in addition to the organizations named above, the District of Columbia Council of Governments, Booz-Allen-Hamilton, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
