On February 23, 20202, a number of Environmental and Energy management Institute faculty and students celebrated that academic year’s achievements at the 2020 SEAS Engineer’s Ball. Held at the world famous Washington Mayflower Hotel, the event attracted several hundred students, faculty and guests from across the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
The event was the highlight of National Engineers Week that always is conducted during the week in February that encompasses George Washington's actual birthday, February 22. In addition to GW, it is observed by more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies throughout the United States.
The purpose of events like the Engineers’ Ball and National Engineers Week is to call attention to the contributions to society that engineers make to may aspects of modern society, including protecting our environmental resources.

The official celebration of National Engineers Week was started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers in conjunction with President George Washington's Birthday. However, some universities have been celebrating National Engineers’ Week for more than a hundred years, since at least 1903. Since President George Washington is the name namesake of GW, Engineers’ Week and the Engineers’ Ball are especially important at our University.
