On August 28, 2003, the 2003 incoming graduate students in the Environmental and Energy Management program, along with a number of continuing students, enjoyed a terrific luncheon feast on the front lawn of Tompkins Hall. The purposes of the event were to kick off the 2003-2004 academic year, provide an opportunity for new students to meet faculty members and their fellow graduate students, and to attend several orientation sessions covering a variety of important topics.
At the orientation, each student received an armful of GW gadgets, including a GW carryall/backpack, CD carrying case and a dozen or so other GW souvenir items. After the two-hour lunch, orientation sessions were held to provide basic guidance on procedures to masters and doctoral students. Long-time E&EM student J.P. Blackford, former President of the GW Engineering Council and veteran of many orientation sessions throughout his undergraduate, masters and doctoral years at GW, summed up the day when he said “perfect weather, great food, and lots of enthusiastic colleagues – what more could you ask?”
