On July 25, 20102, several EEM grad students and faculty participated in a symposium to examine the Department of Defense’s push for next generation energy technology. Participation in the event, which was entitled “The Department of Defense and Next Generation Energy Technology,” was part of EEM's research program on Net Zero Energy.
The symposium featured Jon Powers, Federal Environmental Executive for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, along with a number of additional notable panelists from the government and the private sector. At the event, panelists entered into a spirited debate on the impact of the DOD's investment in next generation energy technology.
In addition to Mr. Powers, panelists included the following key national energy personalities:
- Dr. Jeff Marqusee, Executive Director of the Strategic Environmental Research & Development Program and Director of the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, Department of Defense
- Mr. Jeff Weiss, Co-founder and CFO of Distributed Sun, a company that develops, finances, constructs, owns and operates commercial scale solar energy systems in the USA
- Dr. Holmes Hummel, Senior Policy Advisor for Policy and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy
