E&EM doctoral students Steve Fields and Ed Hagarty presented the results of their doctoral research projects to date at GW’s "Research and Discovery" exhibition on November 14, 2007. The "Research and Discovery" exhibition was part of a week of celebratory activities leading up to the inauguration of Steven Knapp as GW's 16th president.

The event provided an opportunity for GW faculty and students to display the research that has been underway on the main campus at Foggy Bottom. Nationally recognized scholars, along with GW faculty and students, highlighted an array of research projects and accomplishments.

Ed’s research title is “A Predictive Risk Modeling System for the Management of Small-Scale Water and Wastewater Facilities.” Ed is developing a decision-aiding system to help public health and environmental managers select the water and wastewater projects which maximize public health benefits within a given budget. In his research, Ed is identifying and ranking public health risk criteria. He intends to test the system based on the water and wastewater projects at the Grand Canyon National Park.

The title of Steve’s research effort is “Decision Support Model for Management of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks.” Steve is focusing on the development of a decision support model to identify preferred technologies for state environmental managers to use when managing Leaking Underground Storage Tanks using statistical theory. Steve’s model compares two in-situ groundwater remediation technologies, air sparging and bioremediation
