On May 23rd Scott Christian will start as an intern with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in their Office of Transportation and Air Quality's Smartway program. The Smartway program is a voluntary EPA program to assist in the more efficient movement of Frieght in the United States. Since imports and exports are growing EPA has sought to find solutions to freight movement in and out of intermodal links as well as reduce truck idling times. In fact U.S. imports may triple by 2020.

Scott will be assisting the program with some programming and model development to map out truck idling emissions, and assist them with the programs expansion to Sea Ports which handle 95% of the US foreign cargo by weight.

Scott has worked with the port industry through a joint internship between the Global Environment and Technology Foundation and the American Association of Port Authorities. Scott says:"Networking really is key to getting where you want to go." Scott got his GETF/AAPA internship through Nick Martin (one of our doctoral students). That internship is how he heard about and gave him the skills to apply for the Smartway internship.
